painting a swingarm

Post by remington0404 »

the guy i bought my bike off of told me my swing arm was baked or something like that to get the swing arm bearings out... causing it to have a weird goldish color... and since it was scratched up, ugly as hell, and it pa the weather sucks right now, i figured what the heck take it off replace/lube the bearings, sand and repaint the swingarm. so i sanded it all down with 100 gritt paper, then went over it alittle bit with some steel wool. i thought about just polishing it up but since i couldn't get the gold off of the welds, and out of the tight spaces, i figured go ahead stick to the orignal plan and paint it... soo i primed the whole thing gray. then today i found out u can't paint aluminum or something like that and its all just gonna flake off... anyone know if there is any truth to this or am ok and go ahead and put a top coat and clear coat on it?

( the bike is a 1995 kdx h1 with an aluminum swing arm)

What kind of primer did you use?
You should use aluminum oxide primer or an aluminum primer of some sort or it will flake off

As always and everywhere...paint performance is a bit-o-paint and a WHOLE lot of prep.

I painted mine last year with Dupli-Color High temp engine paint I believe i used cast coat aluminum color. The stuff dries very hard and non-tacky. I is all still looking good, been washed many times.

i just picked up some wheel paint and clear coat, i figured a swingarm is kinda close to a wheel ( matieral, punishment .. road chips curbs, brake dust ). i tested it on the rear brake master cyinder, looks good, a tad to dark of a silver, but long as it holds up alright i don't care lol... it will look better than the burnt gold and black that was on it from before
