Hey,

I want to go up on my rear spring from the 5.0 to a 5.2 or 5.3...

I noticed that the stock spring is tapered at the bottom and will not accept an aftermarket spring without an adapter of some sort.

What do I need for the spring swap to work?

An aftermarket spring meant for that shock doesn't have the same taper?

I've not replaced mine, but I've seen stacks of springs at the local tuner's shop..the subject was spring replacement...they would have simply fit the KDX KYB shock.

Yeah, 05 200.. I tried to replace the spring when I first got the bike with one that came off of my yz250,it was an aftermarket 5.3.

The spring series is the same, for example the race tech site has both the yz and kdx listed as the SRSP 6228 series.

When I fit the new spring over the KDX shock body, the bottom of the spring barely sat on the edge of the shock collar. That is when I noticed that the stocker was tapered in at the bottom. The top where the preload rings are were fine.

By barely, I mean like it had 1/2" of play in it side to side...

There's a fly in the ointment somewheres. RaceTech may be incorrect, the spring of your Yamahammer was NOT a 6228..something.

In any case, you're right. The KDX spring is smaller on one end..and a 'regular' spring isn't going to fit.

Are there adapters? I don't know. Why not just get a 5.2 for the KDX? Seems they DO go in 2s...5.0, 5.2 etc.

Yep. Just checked BuyKaw..they list 4.8 to 5.4 by .2s for the '05 2-hunnert.

BUT I jump my bike on mx tracks as well as woods ride. I like my do it all bike!!

I am running the .43 Eibach 996 springs in the front with two shims removed from the valve stack, 17 out on clickers. Belray 7.5w 110mm from the top. I love the front, it sticks in the corners, is plush, yet can take a curb sized square edge and keep going straight with no drama at all. AND it takes a big MX hit too (well, maybe not a bubba stewart hit...)

The rear is ok, and I like the way the valving feels, I just tend to bottom it more than the front upon occasion.

I am using the spring as an excuse to take apart the linkage again and grease it as well as changing the shock oil.

You may get a better deal if you have a suspension shop close by that has springs FOR the KDX KYB. I would guess that any tuner-type could look at the spring and know what it was. The tapered part certainly isn't universal..but I don't know where besides a KDX they are used.

I had to make an adapter for my 88 when I replaced the stock spring with an Eibach 5.0kg spring. I made it from 2024 aluminum. I turned it on my lathe at work. Without the adapter my new spring flopped around like crazy. I don't remember the exact dimensions but I could get them for you if needed.

Certainly one could be made. My 'get the correct spring' wasn't to discourage that.

It's going to have to be stout..and few riders (seem to be QUITE a few here) have the ability to look at a need for some metal thing and say, 'S'cuse me while I whip this out!'

I suppose this would be true: The fee sag is going to be offset by the thickness of the adapter.

Well...so is the race sag, but you can adjust for that. You can't adjust free sag..it is what it is.

Yea, I wanted to just put the spring on and not have to screw around making something that I didn't feel I should have had to.

I talked to several guys at Eibach and they told me that was all they had to offer as a replacement spring for my 88.

I found out later by chance that the spring they sold me was a general replacement for 80's vintage bikes. I ran into a guy on a ride that had a 89 CR 250 with the same spring. Only his fit........

I guess I'll have to make my own spring adaptor. Unless what CC is saying the Race Tech site is wrong (hopefully it is..)

Last time I checked spring were around $90-$100 for the rears.

Go to Racetech.com and put in your info they are better on prices.

If you've been to the RT site, then you saw this:

Alternate Shock Spring Series (if standard spring is not available - call for rates and collars)

I'd guess 'collars' is what is going to make that alternate spring series fit...

Does RT NOT have what you want? $110.

They list rates from 4.0 to 6.4!

Probably worth a call to ask about the small end of things. No need to hear after you order one..'Oh...you wanted it to FIT!!??'

BTW...didn't Jason straighten this out a couple weeks back?
