I really feel stupid asking this but what are reeds and where are they on your bike and what do they do

your reeds are located on the intake side of your engine between the carb and your cylinder. they actually sit inside of the cylinder intake. Basically they acy as a one way valve. Allowing intake to flow into the combustion chamber and then closing off combustion from going back into the carb. Do you have a manual?

No need to feel stupid . . .

Refer to the circled section in the graphic below. The assembly 12021 is often called the reed cage assembly. The piece sandwiched between the block (big piece on top) and that curved piece on bottom (affectionately known as "duckbills") is the actual reed. TopperHarley's description is well put.

These reeds as shown, by the way, are something you can change for improved throttle response and power. There's a couple of options. Do searches for "607" and "power AND reed" as well as "vforce" to get lots of info.

**EDIT** - I forgot: there's a multi-petaled reed and a duckbill on both top and bottom of the block (not shown clearly on the drawing).

A pretty much btw...but the reeds control flow to the crankcase...not the combustion chamber. What they are closed to is backpressure from the crankcase when the piston is moving down and forcing air/fuel mixture from the crankcase through the transfer ports to the combustion chamber.

Well, you'd better hope so anyway!

Note the mention of "multi-staged" reeds? THAT'S the power reeds many replace their stockers with - the 607s!!

. . . and here's another, source is howstuffworks.com - it does rather well to illustrate/amplify CC's comment . . .
