Forkin Springs-Need advice

Post by speedtrip »

I need to replace my stock springs. Race tech recommends .42 kg springs and Fredette says .40 kg. Anyone have and experience with any of these spring rates? I weigh 165 before riding gear, and mainly ride my 02 220 on trails in the woods here in Southern Oregon. Thanks in advance.

.40s are fine. Racetech usually recommend on the higher end of the spring rate.

BTW Welcome aboard... :partyman:

Southern Oregon? :boogie:

Where at?

Some say Race Tech's specs are a little high

I weigh 265, race tech recommends .49's, I'm running .46's

I don't know if they are perfect but they sure feel GREAT!

I agree with Wib. Go with the lighter ones. If you don't think they are right, you could sell them here and get most of your money back.

I bought Race Tech spec'd springs and they were too stiff for the trail (according to my tastes. I had to ride really hard to get them to work well. Not always a bad thing, but tired me quickly.)

thanks for the advice guys! Appreciate it. Guess I will be going with the .40 kg springs then. Roseburg Oregon. On a side note, is it that difficult to do the job? I have the manual and have done quite a bit(installed new piston, rings and power reed and dissasembled the KIPS and cleaned all the spooge out of it, along with a rejet and Gnarly chamber) (Talk about a good feeling when it fired up 2nd kick after all that!!!!, I was so proud of my self)The manual is showing quite a few special tools to do it all. Are they really necessary?

Offer Wib a beer and I bet he'll help you out; he lives nearby.

Just be sure to not give him the beer until the forks are done. He's been known to hear his mother calling him after the beer is all gone!!

Fredette says .40s for 165#? If you say so...but I would bet on some misunderstanding somewhere along the line on that one. Fredette is generally quite on the soft side.

I don't know why you would need anything over .38s..and keep the preload down to 5mmor less. Oil level to 110mm.

So...you haven't been down this way for a ride...'cuz....why?

Is it something Wibby said?

C'Mon down!!!

Well...not THIS weekend........but purty darn soon!!!

We got ridin' to do!!

Yeah you're right. A typo on my part. I was thinking about splitting the difference between Fredette(.38) and Race Tech(.42) recommendations.
I DO need to get out more.
Isn't Jefferson South of Eugene and North of Redding? I know there has to be some bitchin rides around.

So much dirt......so little time!

I bought mine from Fredette. If you don't like the spring rate send them back in a reasonable amount of time and he will let you try another spring rate. This was his policy when I bought mine a couple of years ago. Not a bad deal :supz:

Dave-that is a great idea. I just want to be as close possible the first time. On a side note if the manual says to change your fork oil once a year, why didn't they put drain holes in the things?

Those pictures look like you have some sweet riding areas down there. Looks like a little bit of everything. That town where you guys rode in to get a bite.....AWESOME..no worries there huh? How cool is that?-dirt bike friendly!-that doesn't happen to be around Prospect , Oregon is it?

Drain holes?

You don't like the drain screws?

They leave room for a lot of junk to stay in the forks, though.

Good pics, Wibby! Wish I could'a been there!!

Re: 'AWESOME..no worries there huh?'

Not unless you get caught by the Gendarmes. It is not legal to get there on an unlicensed bike.

I just followed 'dem guys.
