Paris Dakar Rally

Post by KarlP »

A buddy of mine, Paul Broome, is running in this.
After stage 5 he is ranked at 149 out of ~ 250 riders.
He is on an XR650LC, rider number 150.

I realize this is not strictly KDX related, but I ride a KDX, he is an associate, therefore close enough.

He is running as a privateer, all his own money and effort and deserves a round of applause.

I wish U.S. media would offer some coverage of this event. It seems certainly just as newsworthy as the latest NASCAR rules change.

I wish him luck. That has to be tough doing the race on your own money. I couldn't imagine the monkeybutt he will have, and the stories he can tell his grandkids.

Versus TV, formerly the OLN network has a daily recap of the day's stages at 12:30pm and 3:30pm PST. They really only show the top 10 participants but it's cool to watch anyway.

OLN = Outdoor Life Network. Dish network and my local Cox cable both carry it.

Ranked 108 at the end of stage 10

go to http://www.dakar.com for more information.

A most amazing event.....
I was thinking we should do something similar in this country.

How about this for comparison:
Ride the length of the Apalachian Trail (~3000 miles)
200 miles a day?
15 days?
2-strokes only to keep the Greenies happy

I caught some of that coverage....Pretty sweet! These guys had to darn near stop because there was a herd of camels in the trail.

What happened to American Jonah Street? He was in the top 5 in one of the first two stages, now he's completely gone. Let's hope his DNF is due to bike failure, not body failure.

Stage 11 is a non-timed stage, no points gained or lost, you just have to get from HERE to THERE in one piece.

Dang new 4-strokes! You won't see that XR650 Blowing up! That terrain would rock on a 500....Of course gas mileage wouldn't. :supz:

Paul has finished stage 13
he came in position 100 for the stage, position 103 overall.

The end is in sight. If he finishes, I will be simply amazed

Just to put things in perspective, these guys have ridden 7246 km in the last 14 days. Pauls elapsed riding time is 78 hrs. Thats averaging 93 km/hr.

The leaders are at something like 60 hours elapsed riding time.

Someone ut that in MPH?

Finished!

245 riders started
132 finished
Paul came in 101 overall

In September '06, we had a Poker Run down at my place to help raise cash for him.
$20 a head, 20 mile trail ride, and we raised $1800 for him.

That is why I am so interested in his effort.

We all kind of figured he'd get over there, finish three stages, get stuck in the sand and come home.
