Hey all
I have a 14/49 tooth sprocket setup at the moment on my 1990 KDX and looking to replace, what is a good combination for this? can i downsize my tooth setup for more pickup? any suggestions?

13/47 is what you want. How you got what is on there is beond me! Seems like they were trying to go fast and get grunt at the same time but didn't know which way to go.

Pick up a 12 too... then you will have both in a matter of minutes.

Cheers M8.. Yes my bike is some wot of a mystery

Also Inda, I have a stock o-ring chain on mine will i need to cut or mod the chain? should it work fine without any issues?

Will going to a 47/13 or 12 give me more acceleration or top end never really explored this area..

the smaller the front sprocket, the less top speed but more grunt you get. The opposite goes for the rear sprocket.

On another note, you don't really gain acceleration, because you can move through the gears faster, but the gears are shorter. For me, the only thing i liked about the 12/47 versus the 13/47 was the slower speeds I could lug at.

Yeah thanks 2001, so what config would you go for? i would imagine anything would be better than a 14/49 setup!

Yes, like inda stated, go with the OEM factory gearing, 13/47. Also buy a 12 tooth front sprocket. I think most guys on here don't use anything other higher than 13/47.

Get a 13/47 and a 12t front to go with it. Then you can swap the front sprocket easily to try the pair and see which you like best.

A 108 link chain would be suffice for 12/47 and 13/47, no ??

I run a 12/48

Being a biGGer kinda guy I need all the help I can get

Only reason I'm running the 48 is thats what the bike shop said was stock and I forgot to look it up before hand

But it works for me

55 plates of course...

Well each plate connects 2 links.....

Sooooo that makes 110 including the master.....

Sooooo that would be 108 links + master link.....

Correct guys ???

css is worthless

I just went out to look at my chain....couldn't find the master link!
:hmm:

That can't be good....

BTW..but, yes. 55 sideplates (all of them) is a 110 link chain. A master link IS part of what makes up the length of the chain after all. You can't add just a side plate without the link that goes with it, else your master link wouldn't fit, 'eh? Basically, your chain must be gay (very happy) to work. How's that?

'Worthless' is a tad strong, don'tcha think?

What is the question? You can see pull in both sprockets. You're looking to change final drive ratio anyway, so...does it matter what shape they're in?

With a 14T CSS I suspect you may have a 110 link chain as well. IF you are headed toward m0rie's excellent suggestion, you will want a 108 link chain for the 12,13 and 47.
