FMF shorty silencer ???

Post by beeds3000 »

It is time for a new silencer mine broke at the welds and it old. I like loud and the looks of the FMF shorty pipe they have does anyone know if this is a good silencer or anything more about it??? we basically use 1-4 gear on smooth and rocky trails. and sometimes straight flat spots ???

Here's a link of a picture of the pipe.

I'd go get your silencer welded. Loud pipes just loose us the right to ride on public land...and having no spark arrestor is even worse.

Morie is dead right, can you say LOUD !!!!

A mate of mine who passed away used to have an 05 YZ125 with a Fatty pipe and Shorty muffler and it made your ears bleed. It was rediculously loud.

OK from my experience with the shorty if fitted your bike it 'may' spooge, run hot, pre-detonate, run-on, foul plugs, seize pistons, blow power valves, miss shift, leak coolant, pre-ignite, slip the clutch, stretch the chain, brakes fade, backfire and generally run crap. :butthead: I did say MAY !!!

Don't you understand you/we will have NOWHERE to ride once they close all the riding spots down due to noise pollution. It's happening everywhere already, all we need are asshats to make it happen quicker. A silencer should do exactly that, SILENCE or reduce the noise emitted. Why on earth would you want something that will annoy everyone for no gain. Spend your money on suspension if you want to be quicker. A noisy silencer is as useful as tits on a bull so don't waste your time or money. Now can I get my 10 minutes it took to type this because I'm sure it will all mean nothing to you but it was worth a try.

All my life I have watched great riding areas close largely due to noise levels that are far too high and 100% unnecessary. It only takes 1 idiot to ruin it for everyone. Most of the older and more experienced riders here have moved to quieten their bikes, at no loss of power. These are not slow riders either. If you have any respect for the people here at all, then listen to what they have to say about noise. Gain from their experience, which they so freely share

Know what else I've noticed?

Noisey bike = Less riding ability

You may have observed the same thing. Think about it.

Try to get something out of riding quickly and smoothly....which will in turn make you faster. I'm 50 yrs old and I love surprising the younger guys. I love it when they try to keep up. And can't. My bike is real quiet and I have learned to pay respect to all trail users. Why?....cause then I have a place to ride next time. Pretty simple.
You are obviously young, but don't let that stop you from THINKING about the damage you are doing to motorcycling

amen to that.
I ride with a guy that is 70 years old, he rides 1 of 'em 450 pumpkin (nobody's perfect  )
His bike is quiet, he's smooth AND fast. I am 30 and in good shape but keeping up with him is HARD (the other guys I ride with have the same issue and they all have different bikes).
I have learned a lot trying to follow the guy. Now I can keep up but I still use so much more energy than he does it's unreal.

So to stay on topic, my 2 cents on that is using a loud muffler = bad promotion for the sport and no real gain of power on the trail.
Even if it did I doubt you'd really notice, you might convince yourself it does and ride a bit faster but it probably has more to do with your confidence level.

Just remember the rule of riding fast: 10% machine 90% rider. :supz:

Wow when I asked the question about the Shorty pipe I wasn't expecting all these responce's but ya I understand what you mean about the loudness... So then besides the shorty what is a good pipe??? FMF? Pro Circuit ? Obviously I don't want the super quit FMF power 2 super silent one but what are my options ???

Oh ya and were you joking when you said the shorty pipe would stretch chains, leak coolant, Spooge, pre ignite, etc. I have ran my bike with no silencer at all out on my farm for about an hour it was way to loud but the bike ran fine, how is a shorty going to stretch chains does it add that much more power or something ????

ok...im afraid there real problem here is location...up here in canada...our riding areas are remote, and there aret neighbourhoods next to trails, where we can ride ther is bush, miles of it. so as far as noise complaints up here goes...there is no restriction...also, i prefer to hear of a bike is coming so i can get off the trail if im walking on it.

And if u thiunk a dirtbike is loud...how about those chevy 4x4's with hed jobs and 4 inch tires that go trashing through my trails at midnight...or mabye the quads with aftermarket 4 stroke pipes that make em sounds like monsters...yea...my little KDX is really annoying aint it? SUre i know none of you can say the same...but i just love to hear a screaming bike...that simple...nothing is more of a turn on then seeng loud bike go wailing by you...thats cool for me... Mabye its my redneck ways that do it... but i just want a LOUD PIPE...so should i go for a Shorty?

If you use aloud pipe you wont be able to hear those things when you are riding. But if you use a quieter pipe you may hear them and can keep from getting run over by those other loud guys.
