Oil leaking behind countershaft sprocket

Post by KanuckKDX »

Am I the only one with this leak?

I had it a few years ago and simply pulled the sprocket, sleeve and o-ring, cleaned them and re-installed. I thought it was because I got too close with the pressure washer (I am still learning how to properly maintain a bike) but now it's leaking again and I didn't blast it with the pressure washer.

Should I replace any parts? the o-ring must be easy and cheap. Can I prevent this?

Most likely the orings have deteriorated to the point that they should be replaced. The oil seal might also have worn a groove in the sleeve. If this is the case the orings, sleeve and seal should all be replaced.

Cam sprocket? You mean the countershaft sprocket? On KTM's this is a real common problem, caused by people running their chains too tight. The suspension compresses and the chain gets really tight and yanks on the c/s. When I got my KTM, I set the chain tension the recommended way- compress the suspension until the c/s, swingarm, and axle are all in a straight line. Set 3/4" of slack. Release it all and measure slack w/ suspension relaxed.

Yes you are right about the sprocket I am talking about.

I pulled 1 o-ring out. Are there 2? Do I have to just pull the second from behind the fisrt? I will replace both if I can.

I looked to see what seal I might replace and the part number appears to be 92051. Can anyone tell me if that is the one or give me the correct number? And how do I replace that seal? My manual doesn't seem to give me a view that helps. Perhaps I just don't know where to look.

One of my buddies showed my nephew how to set chain tension and I never checked it. Perhaps it was too tight. I have found that when I don't personally watch maintainence things go awry. It may be chain tension that did it.
