Damaged rear linakage, what to do?

Post by strider80 »

Well, I heard some squeaking from my rear suspension yesterday and tore it all apart today. All the bearings were mucked up with dirt and need to be replaced, in both the swingarm and linkage. The problem though is that the linkage bearing where the shock attaches is totally shredded, there weren't even any needles left. I am assuming as the needles squeezed out they damaged the aluminum pretty bad (ovalized), see pics below. So what to do? I could remachine the linkage and sleeve it with steel, but a lot of the strength would be gone. Anyone know what the linkage rocker goes for new or used?

Also, what is the best way to remove and install the bearings in the swingarm and linkage? Socket and hammer method?

NOT A HAMMER !!! I used a sockets, vice and large D or G clamps. Put the bearings in a ziplock bag and into deep freeze for a good few hrs before install as it shrinks em enough to press in easily.

Bearing press or sockets and clamps is how i've always pressed them in and out. You could check ebay and see if anybody is parting out a KDX for the linkage, otherwise i'd dress it out and make a sleeve for it.

Cool, we have one at work, I thought it might be too small, but I will give it a try.
