Green Hornet,
Welding up the drain plug hole would be by far the best situation, "a good as new fix". However there is a lot of work in doing it right. The engine would need to be disassembled and you would need to find a good welding shop that can handle welding aluminum and some one that can spot face, drill and tap the new hole.
The way I fix cases, is to take the dissembled engine case and clean it up very well. Then I make an aluminum threaded T-bushing with a threaded hole that I want my drain plug hole to be. I usually drill out the existing (stripped) drain plug hole in the case a little larger, then I insert the T-bushing and weld it into place.
This is the best fix of all (good as new), but again it is a little expensive and time consuming.
