You have first got to determine what spring rate you need. There a a few sites that have rate calculators like RaceTech or MX-Tech. Then AFTER you determine what you need, you then determine IF a stock XR had that rate. Or you just buy new springs.

Yeah..figure out your rate requirements first.

XR springs are in the .38-.42 range, depending on year, make, model.

I preferred acutal honda springs, not springs made FOR a honda. That means getting them from dealer or 3rd party OEM parts seller (like ron ayers).

I got my honda springs from MX-Tech. Red wings on the packaging and everything!

As an XR owner, I see XR400 riders swapping out their stock springs routinely. Most are about .40 so if that's the rate you want, they are easy to find used. You can look at Thumpertalk.com or watch eBay. If I were looking I would try and get someone on Thumpertalk to sell me theirs.

It was easy for me - I found srpings for my XR and moved the XR springs to the KDX. Next I want to put the USD KX forks on the KDX.

Mostly because they are

A) Cheap (take off are almost always available as the stock spring rate on a XR400 is too low for the bike)

B) They are hot wound and don't tend to shrink and fail so easily

C) Come in a range of .38 to .42 which is the range that most KDX riders want to put in their front forks

D) They fill up substantially more of the fork tube than the stockers and most other available replacements since most are of the opinion that forks work better with springs in them then they do with spacers.
