Just start by removing the snorkle. If you like what that does for it then you can go with some holes in the lid or remove it and save your cover for nasty riding and ty-wrap the VR to the frame somewhere.....

I bought mine with the snorkle removed and holes drilled into the top.

I took the lid off.

I noticed a distinct increase in power and can now lift the front tire in all seven gears (including reverse and neutral).

The throatier intake noise makes it sound like a four-stroke. :)

It's not the Voltage Regulator that's ON the lid. Its the Sparky Box. The VR is the 2-wire component that is bolted to the frame just behind the air box.

Any reduction in pressure differentials will make an engine run more lean. Removal of the lid or reduction of restriction on the intake side does reduce that differential.

It's not that fuel gets sucked into the carb throat. Atmospheric pressure pushes the fuel into the throat due to the reduced pressure in that area.

The 'throaty' noise sounds like a 1/2 dead duck getting run over by a truck.

...if you like that sort of thing...................

Quack!!

After debating what I should do with the lid I decided to remove it completly.
My bike is stock so far and I did not have to rejet, I just played with needle and airscrew to make it work. I think it's as close as perfect as I can get it. There is probably room for improvment but I am learning as I go along.
I ride in a lot of fine dust, so I need to clean the air filter every other ride or so.
So far so good.
I hope this helped
