Rear tire sizes.

Post by jafo »

I know this has probably been discussed before but on rear tire sizes, I know it effects the final gear ratio. So how would a 110/100/18 effect the final ratio from a 120/100/18? Would it have less top end? I'm shopping for a new rear tire for my vintage junk, and Most of these tracks I rearley see 4 gear, and alot of tight flat turns. I'm looking at the Kenda Trackmaster II. I run one on the blue bike and it's awsome. Does good in mud and dry conditions and very durable. So here's my options:

100/100/18

110/100/18

120/100/18

I'd like to figure out what the first two numbers represent on the tire size. I know the last number is rim size but the first tow numbers one has to be width and the other sidwall height or outside diameter or something like that.

Width/Height to width/rim size

The middle number is aspect ratio... as in percentage. 100 wide and 100% high as it is wide is how I know to read it.

100/100/18 will be narrower and shorter than the rest. Giving it a lower profile and give you greater torque and less top speed.

I did some research on the difference (% wise on height) on the tire sizes two years ago or so...when I was changing the gear ratio on the KDX. I believe it worked out that a 110 is ~5-6% taller than the 100. Same for the 120 to the 110. I believe that worked out to be about 1 tooth different on the back to keep approximatley the same gear ratio. It's been a long time...so I may be off .5% or so....

110 is narrower width than the 120, 100 is the same height
I run either a 110/100 D756 or a 110/90 D952. I have to try the D952, but pattern appears to be the same, except the knob cuts are a bit different
