chain

Post by scheckaet »

It's finally time to replace chain... I was wondering what type and brand you all are using. Any recommendation for something durable and fairly cheap?
thanks

I found that fairly cheap means it costs half as much as lasts 1/3rd as long. I am sticking to DID X Ring and good sprockets.

I did the rockymountainmc.com house brand Primary Drive. Very nice gold X-ring chain. Very reasonable price too compared to the name brand chains...........

I used to replace sprocket and chain on my old 125 TY yamaha (old dad's advice...says the chain will be worn out faster)
What is your take on that? truth or myth?
thanks for all your replies :supz:

I've always replaced chain and sprocket as a set.
I've been using a good chain, x-ring something or other, ~$90.00 I think and a steel "Z tooth" rear sprocket by Sunstar. The teeth on the rear sprocket are offset every other one. Front sprocket is OEM

I've been getting 18 -24 months use, or two to three rear tires.

I run the chain pretty loose, and never lubricate or clean it, but that is just me.

re: truth or myth

Truth...most of the time.

If a chain never stretched (wore out/failed), the sprockets would never wear out. Putting a new chain on windswept teeth is a waste of time....and $$.

I have had great luck with the RK X-Ring, about $50 depending on where you get it. I run the stock steel sprockets, and only lube the chain with WD-40. I know, WD is not a true lube so I guess I "protect" the chain after each ride and wash. They seem to last forever when doing this.

I have been using Sunstar sprockets on my four strokes, KTM 300 and now on the KDX. DID 520 O-ring is the only chain I have liked for longevity.
