Crush Gasket

Post by TEEEE »

I'm not even sure why I'm asking this, since I'm sure they put it in there for a reason...

How critical is the copper crush gasket between the cylinder and the pipe? Just did the top and and the old one was toast, only about 1/2 there. The top end gasket kit I bought came with o-rings, but no crush gasket (Cometic).

I'm having troubling finding one locally and I'm dying to get riding!

I think that the big O-ring that came in the Cometic gasket kit is intended to be used for the exhaust.

Like Ron said. I noticed when I installed the Cometic O-Ring, it sealed the exhaust much better. I was not getting that splatter on the fender. I am using the Cometic Gaskets, in conjunction with RDB Head Mod and have no problems. Also Ron, the Bike rips since your head & carb mod.-John

My kit came with two o-rings, but both are the same size and same part number, and both fit into the pipe correctly. There doesn't seem to be anything for the exhaust/cylinder junction.

I wanted to do the carb & head while I had it apart, but my list of maintenance needs got long enough to bump those mods off the $ list. Hopefully over the winter...

I re-read your post-Check to see if that part is listed as included items on the back of the Gasket Packet. I have a torque spacer and just put that copper thingy to the side. Since I use the torque spacer, I only use 1 O-Ring for the Pipe/Cylinder junction.

It isn't listed on the gasket pack. There are only two o-rings, and they are the same size and part #.

Between the old o-rings, the new ones, and some 1211, I can make a workable situation if I can't get the real part in time...

Where's Weeville?

I've got one (I think) that came in a gasket kit that I did not need

I'll have some pics in a few...

That looks like it will fit, but I found a shop across town that has some of the OEM ones in stock. I'm going to swing by and get one tomorrow. Thanks for the offer though!

To answer the question: 'How critical is the copper crush gasket..'

It's not.

If it was a matter of ride or not I'd certainly put the pipe on without it.

That said, it IS there for a reason. The pipe being a rather hard nickel steel and the cylinder biing a rather soft aluminum, you really don't want the two banging/rattling on each other.
