Can i run this cylinder wall!?!
Hi guys i am new to this forum. I have several dirtbikes but my KDX 220 is my absolute favorite. I know the 220’s have defective pistons, but this one is still original and it has been ridden hard its whole life. To my disbelief, the compression was 155psi. Regardless, I’m finally giving this bike the love and respect it deserves. I ordered an Athena piston kit from Richard Freddette. And began tearing the head down. This is my first time doing it. Once I got a look inside I noticed some pitting which scared the hell out of me, then I noticed a vertical line/scratch on the opposite side. Upon research, it seems like the pitting is normal and fine. And the scratch is nothing to worry about either, especially since it had 155 psi before. I have to really try hard to be able to feel the scratch with my finger nail. I can barely feel it with my fingertip. What do you guys think?! Thank you very much for any help. I cant wait to ride this thing again!!!!

Absolutely not. That pitting looks awful and there's also a chunk of plating missing around your KIPS port. Send it for a replate and enjoy it for years to come!

That's the worst pitting I've ever seen on any cylinder. I agree with Nick. I personally wouldn't trust it and would be sending it out for a replate.

Is that dirt inside the cylinder?

Lots of companies in the USA that do replating by mail or even cylinder exchanges. Powerseal, langcourt, just to name a few. A google search may turn up someone local to you.Strider380 wrote: ↑09:35 pm Mar 30 2022 Thank you for the opinions! I will take that advice and get it replated. Millennium Technologies did mine and I was very pleased with the results.
