You did not specify the L1 so I'll assume L1=J 38.15mm
1174J is equiv to BEQ
1173J is equiv to BEP
The difference is the diameter, the 1174J is leaner.

1174 is leaner on the straight section of the needle (larger diameter) as Mac stated. IMHO neither one of those needles is ideal for the KDX. I'd look to the DEM or CEM (stock slide) or DEK or CEK (#7 slide). I prefer the power characteristics of the Dxx needles best.

To add to Rhodesters post:

For E series KDX's with a stock #5 slide a CGK or DGK would be good choices for additional smoothness and power from the stock carb.
