Please Help!
I’m attempting to put a new Piston in my 1998 KDX200. I’m in the process of removing the top end and became stuck when I got to a valve with a gear on the exhaust side of bike. I pulled off cover and removed bottom gasket which is very worn. Can someone plz tell me what this is and how to get it off so I can pull off top? I’ve never done this and this seems to be my first major obstacle. Here is a pic of what I’m talking about.
What is this??- KDXGarage

"What is this??"
"This" is when YOU really need a service manual. :-)
The two most important words you will hear all day... RIGHTY LOOSEY
Look up some old threads to see umpteen jillion people who found someone before them had broken the shaft or internal parts.
Use something like a medium adjustable wrench to hold the gear portion still, then righty loosey. Use some penetrating oil and give it time to work. You DO NOT want to break the threaded portion off or damage the portion that rotates internally (if someone else already has not done it for you)

Re: Please Help!
Ok thanks! That’s basically what I was going to attempt. I ordered a manual and it’s on way. Can you please tell me what this gear ( part ) is and what it does? I need to order new gaskets for it.

As opposed to...??
power valve system advancing rod
Look around on here for KIPS (Kawasaki Integrated Power valve System)

Re: Please Help!
Ok thanks. I did exactly what you said ( held rod, and turned right to loosen ) and it came off. Can’t thank you enough. Ok so it’s part of the KIPS. I just assumed kips was on other side where it’s written. I’m learning as I go. Thanks again for the help.

Re: Please Help!
No problem. Thanks for coming on here and asking instead of cranking on it like a fair amount of folks have done. (generally people who later sold it damaged, then the new owner comes on and asks about it)
