Stock header material?
Hey guys, I had a question. What material is the stock expansion header made out of? Is it normal steel or is it stainless? I stripped the paint off because I like the shiny pipes but I don't want it to rust.

The stock pipe is standard carbon steel and will rust without some kind of coating to protect it. You could probably have it ceramic coated in a fake chrome but it would cost more than an aftermarket pipe. If you really want shiny get a PC or FMF pipe.

This is how my pipe turned out. Made a custom name plate as well. Still undecided if I want to redo the coloring or not because I wanted more of the blue coloring, but this is what it looks like.

A lot of people in the Yamaha RD community use Mop&Glo on their bare steel expansion chambers, never tried it myself though.

Looks almost like one of the factory racing pipes. How did you get it to blue?

Re: Stock header material?
Yeah, that was the look I was trying to go for. I started by stripping the paint off, sanding the pipe starting at 100 grit up to 600. I got it to blue by using a propane torch along the pipe seams and welds. Also, to get that bluish purple on the section closer to the inlet, I let a heat gun run blowing through the inlet of the pipe. Also was able to burn out all of the baked up carbon that has been in there since 1993

Awesome. I was curious if it was just old school heat or you did some other kind of magic. Thanks for the info!

I like it. Nice job on the oxidation.
