KDX odometer/cable issues 1994

Post by 2stroke1971 »

Did the 1994 KDX200 ever come with an odometer? Was it an option? I bought what was supposed to be an odometer cable for my 94 and it fits into the front wheel speedo drive just fine, as well as both of the gauges I was thinking about using. One is a simple odometer, and the other is a speedometer with a trip meter. Not sure which one I will wind up using. Im also not sure how the accuracy will play out in the end, thats something I will check.

My issue so far is how long the cable is. From its connection at the front hub, I have it running up the fork and then into the light shroud. In order to fit into my instrument of choice, it has to take a couple of severe bends to the right and back up in order to take up some length. If it was 5 inches shorter I think it would work out fine. It would probably not wear very well with the tight "S" it has to turn to fit.

EDIT: I saw a post here about an older KDX and the cable routing, it appears the slack runs in a bowed curve behind the fork...that model had the drive mount at the hub on the back side, my 94 has it on the front. I did see a picture of one of the E series with the slack looped out at the back as well. Just seems vulnerable hanging like that.

Ill see how it works I guess.

Can't comment about your E series as mine is a later H Series. I'm quite sure they both have the same fork, so speedo cable should be same too.

My inner cable measures right at 40" long and drives the stock odometer. In addition, I have a Trail Tech Vapor mounted. This gives me an electronic speedometer and a mechanical odometer that I can reset either way in 10ths of a mile. Set up is for old style time keeping enduros.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks!
This is what i settled on, as the ones I could find online look. Im going to make some guides to help keep it from hanging out away from the bike. So, I guess I answered my own questions mostly. Helps to write it down, maybe the post will help someone else in the future.

I would suggest running the cable on the inside of the fork leg, same as shown on OEM pics. Running cable on outside increases chances of getting snagged on brush & stuff. Same is true for front brake line.

Something else to consider, OEM odometer mounting is offset to right to ease cable routing. Mounting is off the 2 right handlebar clamp bolts.

In stock form, there was a ring on the top of the fork guard. I think there was also a bracket on the right rear side of the fender. Also, in stock form, it came with a combination tripmeter / odometer. 1995 and newer came with a small tripmeter on the right, but 1989 - 1994 came with the bracket shown below.
