00’ KDX 220r power

Post by Hclarkdx »

Hello I have a 2000 kdx 220r with fresh wiseco piston, fresh crank seal, v force 3 reeds, fmf gnarly (woods) pipe, fmf turbine core silencer, jd jet kit for my altitude, running 40:1 and I feel like I need more power. A ktm or husky is way too expensive and I’ve fallen in love with my kdx after essentially replacing anything that can and needed replaced. I street legalized it, with Dunlop dual sport tires and I want a little bit more top end without emptying my bank account. Is this possible or is this kinda it in terms of a regular Joes bike? Also call me dumb but what is the airbox lid mod and why? What does it do?

The woods pipe is known to sign off really early in the rpm range. Change it out for the FMF desert version and that will fix your lack of top end for the most part. The air box lid removal helps the KDX breath a little more (ie; doesn't starve it for air at high rpm's). I advise removing it if your after more top end power.

The KDX220 is pretty competitive with a lot of current 250's if the right parts are installed. I know my bike will out pull my buddy's 2018 YZ250X with no problem.

Welcome.

Read up on switching to a 35 mm carb. The KDX220R is ported and carbureted for low end revs, and you are wanting the opposite end of things.

+1 on the FMF pipe swap. Sell the woods pipe to a 200 owner and get a Rev pipe.
+1 on the carb switch too. I went with RB Design on the carb and my 220 revs out to hell with no loss of bottom.

I concur with the RB carb as well.

OP, if you watch my race vid I posted up in the "Racing the KDX" section, at the 15:26 mark you can hear how well a 220 can rev out.
