Re: The infamous KDX petcock
Update time. I went ahead and bought a new petcock. Going off what another member here used (the part# he used has been superseded) I ordered a factory Yamaha petcock part# 2GU-24500-02. Being that it cost less than half of a factory KDX petcock, and being a quality part, I'm happy with it. That said, if and when I need to play with the needle on the carb it's going to take an extra step now.
Oh, did a little video on it to show how it fits and what people can do to fix the original petcock.

Re: The infamous KDX petcock
Thanks for the nice info video! I have always wondered why the KDX had such a long petcock. It makes getting to the choke difficult on the H model, especially with gloves. It would seem easier to get at the needle as well?

Re: The infamous KDX petcock
Thank you for the video! EXCELLENT! Nice to see it. Check out the pic from Tyl3r also. His Yamaha ATV petcock looks to have a different tube height which might be an option.
I think it is not meant to be adjustable. Yours was just so dang worn out, it gave you that impression.
A 1995+ (USA) KDX petcock hangs waaaay down compared to the 1989 - 1994. Why, I do not know.
On the "RES" and "ON", I think that "ON" is the tall one. When it gets below the top of the "ON" tube, the fuel that is left can be used if one turns to "RES" and uses the fuel that is left below the entrance of the taller "ON" tube. I think!

Re: The infamous KDX petcock
Thanks guys.
Not too worried about having to switch to reserve a little sooner. I get pretty far out there at times so that gives me that little bit extra to get back to my truck.
True, probably wasn't adjustable when it was new!
I put the one from my '90 on it since it was fairly fresh from having new seals installed and wasn't being used. It's weird how the '95+ petcock hangs so low for no apparent reason. Shame they didn't stick with the shorter '89-'94 petcock. The shorter petcock definitely helps with getting access to the needle. Not having to pull the carb is a nice bonus.
Yes, I agree, the long tube is your main and the short your reserve.
A little update on fitment. I didn't notice until I rode today but last time I changed my jetting I didn't get my carb installed straight up. The top is canted to the fuel line side so it should have more clearance once I straighten it back up this week. That said, it worked perfectly today.

Re: The infamous KDX petcock
Thanks for finding this! When I got my KDX about 1.5 years ago, I replaced the worn out petcock with a "Chinajunkcheapo" Amazon one due to the high price of the OEM. I will definitely look into replacing it with Yamaha version.

SS109, thank you very much for the good video and notes! I was looking for a good alternative to the Kawa part and didn't want junk.

Nice vid! After taking a look at my bike again, I think that is the one that I used, off the WR instead of the ATV that I posted the link to, mine is really short like that too. Agreed, its a good solution, glad it worked out well for ya.

Re: The infamous KDX petcock
I just stumbled on this post. I put one of these $9 ones from Amazon on mine 3.5 years ago, and I've had no issues with it. YMMV though. The only issue I have is that it makes it a PITA to remove the carburetor with the fuel line right there.bufftester wrote: ↑08:28 pm Jun 29 2020 You can still get OEM petcocks, tho not cheap (~$70), and IIRC the KLX300 (the old one, not the new one) tap fits, but its even more pricey lol.
If you're feeling lucky (you feelin lucky, huh?) there's always this to try. It's only 12$, almost as cheap as those 2 zip ties
Then there's this one, a little bit more but comes with a 3 month warranty!

Re: The infamous KDX petcock
i found this the other day.
same thing happened to the one on the kz750 which i used jb weld to re-attach.
i bought some loctite stik n seal gas & oil & will try that for this one.
just a heads up for anyone using this petcock. probably not if but when
Edited 3/12/21
I tried the loctite stik n seal.
Didn't work for me.
Used the original 2 part jb weld epoxy for the repair

Re: The infamous KDX petcock
the filter for the "on" feed fell off.
when that happens, unfiltered fuel is coming into carb..
