Need a little troubleshooting help. Lots of Spooge all of a sudden.

Post by CMJ »

Hi everyone,
My 2001 220 has started dripping spooge out of the back of the muffler. Not the exhaust exit, but the back of the can. It is getting all over the swing arm. After every ride I end up with about a tablespoon or 2 on the garage floor as is continues to slowly drip out over a few days of sitting. I'm not seeing any gear oil loss, so I'm hoping it's not a crank seal. My bike was clean up until about the last 5 rides. The only change that I have made before this happened was dropping from 14/50 to 13/50 gearing, I'm also riding with a little more throttle as I get better.

I've ordered new exhaust packing for my FMF. Maybe there's a small chance that the current packing is just too saturated to hold anymore spooge? I know that's a long shot.

Actually that's a possibility. I have a Powercore too, but prefer to run the stock muffler so the oil can be drained. (plus its a little quieter) Is there oil spray on fender also?

You could also look at doing a leakdown test to confirm the crank seal is intact.

Any chance that it is running richer due to a change in termperature.

With the same jetting the bike will run richer as the temps get higher.

Also, it may have been building for a while and finally overflowed out the rear.
Thank you for participating on kdxrider.net. :bravo:

Probably should repack the silencer. You can get fiberglass packing from RMATV. I use a generic version instead of FMF.
Good approach to ask yourself "What have I changed recently", but in this case it isn't the gearing.

If you have never repacked it and have more than 20 or 30 rides on it then it very well may be the culprit. Of course, correct jetting will also help minimize spooge (you can never truly get rid of it, nor would you want to, it's how we get oil stains all over the shifts of the 4T guys that ride behind us  )

Repacked today, hopefully that cures it.

How did the packing you removed look?

Soaked, heavy, and dense. I had to use pliers to pull the packing out of the can. It seems like I pulled out a lot more than I put back in. I used real FMF 2 stroke packing and it was light and fluffy. The stuff I pulled out seemed to have an inner core that was different and harder than the rest of the material too.

Possibly that "harder" material is just a result of heat. I see that when I change mine also.
Let us know if the leaking stopped. Good excuse to double check your jetting also.

Yeah, the oil heats up and starts to carbonize, then the packing becomes even less absorptive and the bike gets louder.
