chain adjustment

Post by bws2 »

I was checking the chain adjustment on my '01 KDX200 and it had around 2 inches of slack.

I moved to adjuster back a notch and it ended up around 2.5.

I looks like the acceptable range is 2.2 to 2.8, but it seems like 2.5 is an awful lot of slack.

Do any of you guys run your chain that loose?

I run my chain looser than most. It's better to be too loose than too tight. Lot's of my riding buddies give me crap for it but mine seem to last longer than theirs (over 1000+ hours on my current chain) so they can kiss my grits!

BWS2, I run mine like that. My index, middle, and ring finger together are 2.5 inches. I put them up against the back of the chain slider and the chain is snug across my index finger. Rear wheel off the ground.

I was measuring it with the bike on the kickstand.

That's how I measure mine too. It's quick and accurate depending what type of sausage fingers you have - breakfast links or Brats.

Got a manual? Mine says 55-65mm (2.17-2.56") measured from the swing arm just behind the slider. I also tend to run towards the loose end of the range. It does look slack but never had a problem. Run it too tight and you are asking for counter shaft issues.
