seating rear wheel bearings

I've read that you tap on a large socket in order to seat rear wheel bearings.

If the OD of the bearings is 42mm, would I use a 42mm socket, or would it be too big?

Since I don't have a socket that size, I can't do my own measuring.

Also, is the socket method advisable, or is there a better/safer way to do this?

The socket should only touch the outside diameter of the bearing, but still fit in the wheel hub casting. I listen for a change in sound while tapping. That's how know it's seated all the way in. Put the bearing in the freezer for a several hours to "shrink" it.

I prefer a hydraulic press, but not many home owners have one.

Also, if you don't want to go with a torch, etc., put some boiling hot water onto the bearing pocket to slightly expand it.

I like to use threaded rod instead of a hammer for most bearings.
Less chance of damaging bearing.
If I cannot find the ideal size socket to use for pressing it in I try to find the proper size washer or whatever I have on hand.
Sometimes supported by a socket of a slightly smaller diameter.

The old heat and freeze technique used for main bearings works here as well. Well, it has for me. Sometimes I might just need to lightly tap them in to position.
