Fuel and Moth Balls?

Post by Indawoods »

Anyone ever heard about using Moth Balls as a fuel additive?

Yep, Napthalene mothballs. Five per gallon of pump gas.
Cost, from the local drug store is about $0.40 per tank.

Idles better, less or no pinging due to questionable low grade gas, better acceleration...

****DO NOT USE Paradichlorobenzene mothballs*****

Are you saying you've tried it and got those results?

I think I've heard something like this but didn't think of applying it to a two stroke motor.

Yeah, I've heard of that.....Only recently though. Some a-hole Dad threw it in his kids jr (gas) kart. He won the race, but failed fuel tech. Pretty neat info....Cool you tried it! Now you won't have to worry about moths eating your silencer packing!

Funny thing is that my bike goes toward light and open flames now, so I have to watch it on the trails at dusk...

Naphthalene comes from the word Naphtha which we know is volatile.

Naphthalene forms volatile vapors and can be explosive. It isn't that far removed from benzene and toluene which is known to increase octane.

As with the others, naphthalene is a POSSIBLE carcinogen. Don't eat the stuff Vince.

So your note about being out of shape. I've always believed in the beer and pretzel diet. 15 pounds overweight isn't too bad and it must be the beer or the Makers that is keeping the weight off as it sure isn't the exercise.

I'm sure you've looked up the idea on the web. For those that have not, some maybe interesting input:

ONE

TWO

THREE

In the last two, search the page for 'moth' if you don't want to read the whole thing.

Just because something is a combination of carbon and hydrogen doesn't mean it's the same as or even particularly closely related to some other carbon/hydrogen combo.

If used in sufficient quantity (and nothwithstanding the associated problems with their use) you may increase the octane of your fuel with a naptha-ball additive. An octane increase is not always beneficial in an engine.

But, if it suits you, it tickles me!!

As Inda noted and as noted in some of the above links:

I stand by my results.

Sure... it was old gas... but it sure perked the bike up when I put them in. Next, I will try it on some ethanol enriched gas to see if so so gas can be made good.

40 cents a tank to the Moth Ball makers beats giving it to the gas companies! BASTAGES!

I wasn't arguing with you, just posting what some folks think about it.

Did you ever try toluene?

If you do (did) and found it to be worthless, I'd stand by my opinion of it, too.

Heck...Mr. Rohrich could opine as to the uselessness of toluene...I'd still love the stuff!!

I really wouldn't care.

Seems like it would take a lot of moths to get enough balls.... Or are they especially big down at the lower altitudes?

Oh, and I never paid much attention, how do you tell the bull-moths from the cows?

It's the soaking them in naphthalene that makes them the familiar sized 'moth balls' that are pre-packaged.

If you don't believe that...try soaking one of yours and you'll see what happens.

Availability? Price? Go to your local paint store and buy a pint!! They may not sell it to you if you look like a cracker.

..oh....have I answered my own question?

so let me get this straight...Put 5 Nephalatine (or whatever there called) mothballs into a 1 gallon gas can of 40:1 mixed gas, oil and all, then swish it around, dup it in the bike and youll get more power?

How does this affect the engine life, o  r reliability lol?
