How to torque cylinder bolts ?

Post by kdxdazz »

Just completing a full engine rebuild and wondering how you guys torque the cylinder bolts as a socket won't go on them, was thinking to cut a 1/4 inch square hole in a 12mm spanner so I could use the torque wrench

You have the right idea. Google "motion pro torque wrench adapter" and look at that. On the directions of the adapter it says "if you have the spanner at a 90 degree angle to the torque wrench then your torque value doesn't need to be adjusted."

If you have the spanner running long ways with the torque wrench then you have to use a conversion method to get the right torque value. Just run it at 90 degrees so its easy is basically what the instructions said to me.

If you happen to still have the right side engine cover off then torque the cylinder nuts before you put it back on. Its not necessary but the right rear cylinder nut is tricky to torque with the cover on because of the kips governor shaft.

what you're describing is like a Crow foot wrench.

I have the Motion Pro adapter. It works great, and I didn't have to cut any wrench I already owned. Hopefully, they have that or something similar in Thailand.

You might be able to use a crows foot on the end of your torque wrench but you have to look up the conversion chart since it's not the same as using a socket cuz the crows foot is offset

Cheers guys. I will weld a socket to a 12mm spanner and I also read an article about using a fish scales to work out the torque

I would make sure the wrench you modify is a closed end 12 point, similar to the Motion Pro. There's no room for an open end wrench on the right rear nut around the KIPS governor shaft. Its tough enough getting the 12 point to fit in and grab if the engine cover is in place.
