shifting without clutch

Post by bws2 »

I was wondering if it's okay to shift up or down on a KDX, without using the clutch.

I only use it when I'm on the tarmac.

I've been shifting without the clutch on the dirt for the past 16 years and haven't broken anything - yet [emoji4]

You will speed up the creation, or worsening, of the notches in the clutch basket, since the clutch steel plate will bang up against the basket fingers under pressure of the crankshaft spinning.

Use the clutch, since it will lessen this.

The transmission has constant mesh gears, which is why shifting without the clutch is perfectly fine. Every gear is engaged and turning all the time. Ease off the throttle and shift. I usually do use the clutch when downshifting (preference), but rarely when upshifting.

I have been using an auto clutch (Rekluse) on my KDX for years and no excessive wear on anything. Most of the time I just briefly let off the throttle while shifting.

Been shifting without the clutch for as long as I can remember. Unless you need to modulate the clutch for traction or whatever there is no need.

+1 Clutch to get started and stop, and to help with traction, otherwise I never use the clutch for normal up/down shifting.
