air screw adjustment - doesn't seem to affect idle speed

Post by bws2 »

I'm working on jetting my 2001 KDX 200.

Looked at the jetting guide and I started with the air screw trying to find the highest idle speed.

I got the bike warmed up really well, then set the idle screw down to the lowest point where the bike
would idle, but not die.

Set the air screw out to 1.5 turns then turned it in to find the highest idle, but I couldn't hear any difference.
It did die once the screw was all the way in.

Next, I backed it out to 1.5 and restarted the bike, then tried to back it out further, but still couldn't hear a difference.
It died at about 4 turns out.

Not sure if I'm doing this correctly. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Do you have the next size smaller pilot jet?
Thank you for participating on kdxrider.net. :bravo:

It has a 45 in it now, and I don't have the next smaller size.

I'm at 200 ft above sea level and the temperature was about 58 degrees.

I put a new carb on the bike 2 years ago. I checked the float height the other day and it was 16mm.

I'd say it has about 25 hours on it.

But, I haven't cleaned the carb since I installed it.

Thanks Doakley. How often should the carb be cleaned?

Also, adjust the float to 18mm if you want a better running bike IMO/IME.

Hard question to answer. I've gotten where I clean mine almost every major ride. Definitely before every race. But if it would not idle properly, probably the first thing I would do is tear it down and clean. You cannot reliably adjust a dirty carb.
