to loosen the float bowl on the H kdx do you have to remove the tank so one can take out the carb slide to rotate the carb?any short cuts?

I just loosen the carb mounting flange and airboot and then rotate carb top outward so I can pull the cap. With cap removed you can rotate the carb the opposite direction and remove the float bowl. No tank removal. That said, at that point, it's normally just easier to pull the carb off and work on it on a bench.

easy enough to remove so I always go that route. Loosen and rotate works as well.

Also, JIS screws, not Phillips.

I wish everybody knew this, every bike I buy has 90% of the screw heads stripped out

Yeah, a few years back I bought some JIS screwdrivers, but in the end I always end up replacing the ones that get removed often with allen heads, and the rest with stainless REGULAR phillips. Those JIS screws are made out of clay it seems! lol
