1996 KDX200 rear brake caliper replacement?

Post by KDXRipStick »

Does anyone know if any other bikes rear calipers will fit a kdx200?

Mine is shot and needs a rebuild but the Allen screws are stripped out.

Trying to avoid buying a new one.

Thanks,
Jake

Can you replace the threads with a Heli-coil?

Several years KDX rear brake are the same. Read up on how to get the pins out and buy new pins.

Which pins are you talking about? I have a rebuild kit for the caliper, just can't get the Allen bolt out.

Try doing a web search for "broken bolt extractor". You already have the hole left due to the rounded off allen socket.

There's all kinds of doo-dads specifically made for removing rounded off screw heads. HISXLE is a brand name of a set I have. I also have an assortment of "easy outs" that would probably work just as well.

A little heat and some penetrating oil would probably help too. A really effective penetrating oil is a 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone. Only problem with this mix is the Acetone evaporates away pretty quickly, and it dissolves plastic bottles.

Good luck with this. Let us know how you make out.

OK, it does sound like you just need to remove the stock pins. Read up on broken bolt removal, penetrating oil, heat, cold, time, stripped screws, etc.

On an "E" model, the thread pitch is 10 mm x 1.0 mm.

I fit an older yz250 caliper on my 89 without any issues. Just reused the KDX bracket. Angle is different on the brake line, but it works fine. I would imagine quite a few bikes use the same caliper, or close enough that it would work.

I drilled the bolts out, then used a tap to clean up the threads
