Grins
All I know was that there was 2 models, one had no ADR plate and was restricted to recreational use only and a rare one with an ADR plate that, once it has passed our version of a safety inspection, is allowed to drive on regular roads. I am guessing mine is the F-version lol

Some quick questions while I wait to get my radiator fixed...

I need to fit some more stuff for my inspection... How do I fit a neutral safety light on the old girl?
Also, I need to fit a speedo, I have the sender unit on the front wheel but nothing else.
(And I'd like a tach but so far unsuccesfull in finding a 2T single cylinder tach that connects somehow to the CDI)

Hoping some people on here have had the same issues...

Cheers :partyman:

Look at pictures of other KDX's from your area. You will see the stock speedometer. See if it has a neutral light on it. You need to buy a factory service manual for your bike to not only see what it is missing, but also to make best use of what you have.

Getting ye olde KDX200 road legal

Post by Knightmayre »

Speedo's are like rocking horse ****, I've never even seen one but found a KDX on Gumtree with the original...

Image
At least it's given me hope that there is a neutral switch option (yaayyyy)

Unfortuantly my bike has been butchered at some time- the main loom (which is wrapped in blue insulation) goes to the headlight where Mr Butcher has chopped it and wrapped it in insulation tape.
There are only a few wires visible- the headlight, tailight and brakelight all run off one wire. I also have about 3-4 more mystery wires dangling around the carb area.

I did download a service manual but it's for a US-Spec bike but I'll have another squizz through it later on and see if a neutral light switch is mentioned.

Cheers

Thanks for the link Maverick, but it doesn't show a neutral switch nor the speedometer- just the trip meter :(

I downloaded a user manual but no speedo mentioned in that either. Still looking through the US service manual.

I've been looking at the vapors and someone said that the tach (might even been on here) didn't play nice with our bikes.
I'm more concerned to see if I need a neutral light or not and if so, how do I fit a switch for it.

I don't believe you will need a neutral light for registration, at least when I have had bikes blue slipped they never look for a neutral light, just headlight, brake light, blinkers. Oh and tail light.

Yesterday I went to see the local motorcycle shop that is literally just down my street who does inspections (RWC in Victoria) and he says tthat it has to have a neutral light.
I don't know what to do now. Blah.

IIRC the SR had a neutral switch as part of the original wiring loom. All you would need to do is find that wire and run it to one of the aux lights on the Vapor to use it as a neutral indicator.

I can't find that wire though, I've been looking... will try again later on.
In the meantime I found these on fleabay:

Looks like it might work OK. I am waiting to hear back from them.

Yeah, that's always the fun part of going through some POs rendition of electrical work! Tough when they just cut everything off instead of leaving it in place.

You got that right! I have wires hanging out every where plus the chopped loom at the headlight (which I am currently using for headlight, tail/brake lighs).
Just hope it will cope with the blinkers and the Vapor backlight - assuming I can get it as it's AU$230!

I've found this on fleabay:

That should keep me nice and legal.

I have another question- most of the water cooled KDX's I have seen have the coolant expansion tank behind the radiator but mine is behind the left hand fairing (opposite the exhaust side)
I havne't seen one like that. Any ideas?
Cheers

In case you don't have a wiring diagram for your ADR version of the KDX, here's a link to a page with one plus some other info:

Cheers.
