Graphics

Post by jjavaman »

Hi kids, so I got new plastics for the bike for Xmas and picked up dome graphics on eBay. Got everything one ,looking good and the next day, they are peeling back on the curves? Any ideas on how to get them to stick on the curves on the rad covers?

Heat gun and hold them pressed for a few minutes. Still never worked for me. I cut those parts off

Thanks, I'll try the heat gun and if that doesn't work I think trimming is the way to go.

Did you use any type or solvent (like Brakleen or elec contact cleaner) to clean the plastics prior to installing?

X2 on the heat gun, usually does the trick for me too.

3M primer 94. I use it when I'm doing vinyl wraps. Not cheap but works very well.

Yes I cleaned and dried the new plastic, I did the heat gun( actually used a small propane torch) and I could actually see the graphic start to mould itself to the plastic, I'm going to say success!
If I ever have to do it again, I'll do it in a nice warm/hot room instead of in a cold garage. I know it's a dirt bike and looks aren't important, but it sure does look nice with new plastic and graphics on it! I think I'm faster already :)

Another trick after thoroughly cleaning the plastic, is to flash a torch flame across the plastic surface quickly before applying the vinyl to it. You want to do this quickly so as not to actually heat the panel. You're just treating the surface to make it accept the adhesive more readily, similar to using a primer. This surface treatment isn't lasting so you want to apply the vinyl right afterwards.

I agree, somehow I always feel I ride better when my bike is clean, or at least starts out clean!
