1990 kdx200 project

I bought a 1990 KDX200 for $300. Seller said it doesn't run but when I turned the motor over fuel was coming out the head gasket and dripping pretty bad. I also noticed 1 of the nuts on the head was missing where it was leaking.
My brother is buying it off me and is excited to get it running. Its fairly roached but definitely has potential. It was missing the rear brake caliper so I bought one off EBay for $38 and I already have a rear brake hose.

Going to pull the head and check out the piston and cylinder when the temps get decent outside. Hoping to have this bike running good soon.
Is the cylinder on these plated?

If I may suggest an option, don't spend another penny on anything besides the engine. If it won't run, then there is no need to stop the motorcycle.

In stock form, the cylinder was plated when new. Did someone have a sleeve installed in the last 28 years of ownership? You will know when you open it up and look.

Good luck, and I wish you patience and money. It will take a lot of both to get it in proper shape.

I agree, the plan is to get it running first. If its not worth saving it can be parted out I suppose.

Is the carb a 35 PWK the same as the 95-06 200?

It is not the exact same version, but they are both PWK35.

Our cold spell finally passed by, its in the 50's today.
I got the new head gasket on and everything torqued to spec. When I had the head off I noticed the crankcase was full of premix so I layed the bike on its side and kicked it over several times while it puked out a flood of gas. I turned the fuel petcock on then back to off and tried kicking it over and it started pouring fuel out of the cylinder/pipe after a handful of kicks. Apparently the petcock valve isnt shutting the fuel off and im not sure how the carb can be letting that much fuel into the motor. I kicked it over one more time and it started pouring fuel out instantly. The fuel isnt dripping its a couple of steady streams pouring onto the floor. Headaches!!! It does have spark though.

If it's just pouring through then the float on the carb is stuck open. Time to to pull it off.

I will be removing the carb when I get the chance. The intake will get a good cleaning while I'm at it and check the reeds.

I don't know if the reeds' gap is correct or if they are frayed or chipped, but it sounds like they are well rinsed.

For now. All dirt bikes are money pits. We shovel all day and can never dig ourselves out of the hole. :hmm:

Yes they can be but its a 2 stroke so it wont ever be as bad of a money pit as a 4 stroke.
