Ouch man. Yea, it definitely wasn't the skirt failure I was talking about above. Sorry for your misfortune, that is a bummer after dumping a bunch of money in....

Are there any scratches in the plating surface that will catch your fingernail?

Did the head look like that before you rebuilt it?

97 220 Seized Rod

Post by pumpguy »

Based on the surface finish of the piston crown and skirt, and head too, my opinion is this engine ingested foreign material, or something from the lower end came up and caused the piston and head damage we see.

So, are you sure the rod's lower end bearing is good and not notchy or rattling loose? Any chance the lower end bearing's retainer cage could have broken up and the fragments got pulled up into the top end?

Is/was the air filter clean? Any leaks between the carb and air filter that could allow sand or similar to go through the carb and into the engine?

Rocky Mountain sells a Pro-X connecting rod kit for $82 and RB designs rebuilds your crank for $45. I'm sorry to see that happen to you after doing your top end recently. Best of luck getting it back up and running.
