97 KDX 220 Fuel Range ?

I recently picked up a 1997 KDX 220 with a totally grenaded engine that needed everything to fix ( including cases ). It now runs great and I am really enjoying it after riding 4 strokes ( Honda / Yamaha ) for the last 15 years.
However I was just out riding for an afternoon and found I only got 44 miles of range out of a full tank of gas. Is this about right ?
I can usually go about 75-80 miles on a CRF450X or WR250 full tank.

2 strokes aren't noted for superior gas mileage . If the bike is running well, not too rich, I'd assume that's about right.

Welcome to the forums. You may want to check your jetting to see if it may be a touch rich. If so, you can improve gas mileage some, but it won't be much better from what I have read.

A little low. I can get from 45-60 on a tank on my hybrid (2.1 gal tank). As stated, may be running a bit rich.

Thanks for the replies.
The bike has stock jetting throughout- I checked it. The plug has a nice color and the bike runs nice and clean and sharp off the bottom after I dropped the needle clip 2 positions leaner( elevation here is 700 ft ) According to the specs the gas tank capacity is 11 litres or 2.9 US gal. I used all of it to go 44 miles of a mix of 50/50 low speed woods single track and some higher speed fire roads. I just thought the range was a little short for what a trail bike should have vs my previous experience with my other bikes. I was just curious if other owners were getting similar results. Really liking my KDX !

I just put a new carb on mine, and jetted slightly rich for safety. I see 33mpg with a 14/47 sprocket set. yes, I could get 90 miles from a tank.

check your jet block gasket and jet it proper, it makes a huge difference.

Thanks to all the members with their replies.
After searching this Forum and reading some other posts I am going to recheck the float height, polish the inlet needle and seat ( it was crusty and stuck when I got it ) and see if that improves things. Also, I'm running 12/47 sprocket gearing which doesn't help.

Reset the float level as there was evidence of fuel in the drain tubes ( now at 18 m/m ), afterward had to reset the air screw ( from 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 turns ) and turn down the idle stop considerably. Starts and idles excellent now and driving around the yard seems very clean and responsive. Can't wait to try it out for real on the weekend !

Update: Just FYI

1997 KDX 220R - air box lid and snorkel intact, Twin Air filter, new piston and rings, 32 to 1 mix with Yamalube 2R and 91 octane, stock pipe, float set to 18 m/m, air screw 1 1/2 turns, pilot jet 40, main jet 140, stock needle set in #3 position ( middle ) - Runs great, tractors fantastic, idles smooth and clean, starts 3rd kick cold, 1st kick hot, plug chop shows a nice tan color, no spooge, range is now about 100km or 60 miles to a tank before hitting reserve.

However, just curious, published specs state fuel capacity is 11 litres ? I measured the tank twice and it holds a total of 12.5 litres including the reserve capacity at 3 litres.
Anybody else with similar results ??
