Hey the other day I was out on my 220 doing some slow technical stuff and when I took it out to the road after I was done 2nd gear was whining pretty loud.. I have an FMF pipe on and I could here it clearly over it. It sounds like its supercharged almost. The whining starts at the top of first but it's very quiet. Then you hit second and that's when it's the loudest. bottom of third you can barley hear it then it goes away after the bottom of third. By the way I already checked my oil level and it is right where it should be. Same oil I always used too.

Is it okay to ride my bike right now? Could I be losing second? Finally what will happen if I just leave it for now? Thanks.

Well, worst case you seize something up and are done riding anyway. Your 2nd output gear rides on a collar that goes over the output shaft so it could be that something is not right there. Or it could be one of the cogs rubbing one of the snap rings that keeps everything inplace, or possible an issue with the 5th gear output dogs that engage. Bottom line is you'll need to split the cases. IIWM I'd do it before a major failure.

Is your oil shiny? Anything else that should be considered before jumping in with both feet assuming the worst and splitting the engine?

Yes, I changed the oil. It was shiny, looked silver and metalic almost.

That you lost metal, something is grinding away inside?

I think it is time to separate the crankcase halves and check it out.

Yeah, that "supercharger" sound you're hearing is under-lubricated parts grinding against each other...never a good thing in a transmission.

Well that's just great.. Getting the cases split this winter and going to fix the bike then it's going straight up for sale. Gonna be a newer YZ250 in the near future....

Sorry that your machine broke. That's what machines do. You seem upset, so go on over to the Yamaha two stroke section at Thumper Talk and read up on a few YZ transmission gear failures. After that, KTM forums, hit up VitalMX and look at yesterday's 2017 Honda CRF450 linkage failure thread.

If it gets too upsetting, just sell it as it is or part it out. More fish in the sea,.and you can be back out on the trail before long.
