You can definitely disconnect the cable at the wheel. Just be sure to plug the hole with RTV or something. Mine has been like that for 3 yrs.

You can just plug the odometer drive unit with a suitable sized rubber stopper. Your local hardware store should be able to supply.

Just be sure to grease the gears when you reassemble.

I really think that cylinder needs a replate. That last pic shows a very questionable area. Maybe it's just discoloration from moisture or something. Scotchbrite the hell out of it and see if you see any bare aluminum areas anywhere. If you do it MUST be replated.
