I lost my powerband...

Post by Scrandy »

Hey everyone! So as stupid as this sounds i'm very confused as to what happened today. So I had the bike rejetted a few weeks ago for my fmf desert pipe and vforce reeds. Also bike just had a fresh top end & powervalves checked and cleaned so no issues there. Today I had the bike out for about 5 hours. It was running great then right at the end of the day it suddenly lost a ton of power. It has tons of compression, idles fine, starts fine, revs all the way to limiter with no issues. But the problem is that when you ride it theres no powerband hit anymore. Can hardly pick up the front wheel in second. before i could have the bike under powerband and when you hit the powerband wheelie in 6th. It feels like i'm riding a TTR230 and nobody wants that.

It almost sounds as if the power valves are not opening.

I'd have to agree, sounds like something in the KIPS went south. You can pull the inspection cover off the LH side (round one in front of the KIPS resonator) and see if it moves at around 6k rpm as a quick check.

Thanks for the help! I will check kips. But to me it almost feels like it's starved of fuel at the powerband. Just I don't see how that could be..

That is greatness! The overuse of that word in the two stroke world really gets to me. When I was 17 with my 'ancient' 1975 Elsinore CR250, a younger kid asked me 'does it have a powerband', my reply 'yeah, I just tightened it this morning'.

Best way I can explain it. I not trying to say it like it's a part lol. Just saying it drives like a bad 4 stroke now, the power curve has flattened out with no hit.

It's all good, 'power curve' is a much better term, and what is used in almost every other industry. I don't even know how the term 'power band' got started, but it is very misunderstood among the general power sports public.
