I would think that the woman's would have a little more room in the front.
For protection, get the best you can afford. I picked up one of the Fly Racing by Leatt 5.5 HD chest protectors last year and I really like it.

It's not so much about the differences, but a pretty good article with insight as to why a women might not actually wear women's gear. Who knew?
