I am considering purchasing a 2001 KDX 220 that I looked at yesterday. I was drawn to it because it already has a fork swap done using 2005 YZ250f forks. The bike runs fantastic, literally started on the first kick cold, feels very strong. Other than a minor repairs like rear wheel bearings, lower shock bearing, rear brake pads it doesn't appear to need much. Has full FMF exhaust (Gnarly). My real concern is price, it seems a bit high at $1600. Opinions welcome, should I pass?

Where are you seeing other KDX's with fork swaps that seem to run well in good, not great condition for less than $1,600?

A new Yamaha TT-R230 is $4,000.

Seems like a good price with the fork swap and full FMF exhaust already done. Sounds as if you really like the bike, then don't worry about price and enjoy it !

I haven't seen any with the fork swaps done hard to compare prices. The other KDX I was considering was a 1996 200 for $1300 stock suspension. full exhaust, bark busters.

This is the kind of feedback I needed to help me figure out what to do.

Thanks, I always overthink purchases even when it is not that much money. Just don't want to regret the purchase.

If I didn't already have mine, I'd be all over that before someone else gets it!

Yea, I don't think that's a bad price if the rest of the bike is in good shape. I paid $1700 for a really nice one that just had an exhaust and stock forks and felt it was fair. I'd still try to talk him down though!

I would make sure it has a wiseco piston. If not you are looking at a couple hundred extra dollars to swap the piston.

A piston swap is a bit easier than a front end swap. If you end up getting a KDX220R and you get into riding a fair amount, you will eventually want both (besides aftermarket exhaust).

I'd say 220 with the forks over a 200 for less. I think the 220 has better engine, your example has better forks, its newer, and both have same pipe. But you gotta look 'em over to see how overall what condition they are in. Check out bikefinds web site for price comparisons across country

That is a good deal! If you wait you are going to miss out, don't be a cheapskate.

As far as the top end lol it's literally nothing. A new Wiseco piston kit is $90 at Rockymountainatvmc.com. Add in a cylinder and head gasket and you are still under $150 for a new top end. It really dumbfounds me when people make a big deal out of a 2 stroke top end. I wonder if these same people turn down buying a car because the oil needs to be changed?

Any KDX 200/220 with a front end swap in good condition is worth $2,000 especially where I live.

The 220 could be gone by now. I'm not sure about the 05 yz250f forks but I know the yz 2 stroke got the SSS forks from 06 to current and people still go on and on how good they are. Considering how much other hobbies cost, street bikes, hot rods, guns, RC planes, or whatever else we tend to get into I think a clean, sub $2000 KDX is a good buy. i saw the prices of clean ATC250R's take a huge jump up over the past 5-10 years and I think the KDX's will do the same someday.

You can't find a KDX near me for less than $2000 no matter the condition. Give that man the money!

Yeah, that was a big miss! I wouldn't sell you my 95 200 with RM forks for less than 1800.
I think all inclusive my front end alone was around $600.
