(KDX200H) Replacing the warning lamps with pilot lamp leds

Post by bertos883 »

Hey guys,

I ride a 2001 KDX200J (the aussie H), and after the speedometer seized I've decided to remove the whole unit. My problem is, I want to keep my oil and temperature warning lights intact, so I was thinking of taking a piece of 3mm aluminium and putting a row of pilot LEDs into it, then attaching it to the bars in the centre. Has anyone done anything like this before, and how successful was it? Every search I try comes up with people swapping their indicators for LEDs, which is not what I'm trying to do.

Regards,
Rob.

Unless your KDX has a 12AC to DC converter your idea won't work. LEDs work on DC and KDXs run on AC. As far as keeping the warning lights intact, that should work as long as you use the standard bulb.

Not totally true. I run LED license plate illumination bulbs and they work okay so far on my totally AC system.

That said, there's no question DC is a better power source for LED bulbs. With AC, you're only using half the current. Think of the LED as a check valve, allowing only one way flow of the current.

I would check with your LED supplier to see what they say about the suitability of their bulbs for use with AC current.

As a further check, you could check the suitability of your LEDs using a 12 volt AC power supply for an electronic appliance or gadget.

You might also do a search about LEDs powered with 12 volt AC here on this site. I seem to remember past discussions here on this forum.

On the other hand, if your bike is already set up with a rectifier and battery, you're home free.

Your Aussie J has a dc power supply. Mine is a 2000 and the electrics run 13.7v dc regardless of revs. That wee black box bolted to the frame near your air box lid is regulator/rectifier. I run led tail/brake light and no modifications were necessary. I assume you should be able to trace the wires for the respective circuits on yours and wire in an led instead of incandescent bulb.
Does the oil light even do anything on these? I was curious as I thought that was a hang over from the speedo assembly being used on the SR model that has oil injection.

On a CRF230 (12v DC) I placed a small 3 LED tape strip on the bars to indicate when the headlight is on. (Accidentally kept leaving it on and draining the battery down.)

So ordered some cheap leds off eBay, and wired one in to see if it worked, it does! So making the plate and fitting the leds to it, will attach to the front of the bar clamps where the old dashboard was mounted. Image

Looks good! If you want to change the faceplate, I made a similar dash on my 400ex for the indicator lights and key. I got some polished aluminum diamond plate from Lowes and cut it out of that. Looks pretty spiffy, just an idea though, I think that looks good as is.
