KX Front Axle.

I went ahead and grabbed the set of '99 KX250 forks from my buddy since there was no interest in them. I thought I may try them on my bike. I currently have '97 KX250 forks now. I was compairing the front axles and spacers. The '97 and '99 front axles are alittle different, but I was wondering if they are the same diameter. In other words, I'm wondering if the '97 wheel I have now would work with the '99 front axle and spacers. If anyone has a '98 or '99 front axles they are getting ready to use, could you give me some dimentions? O.D., overall length, distance between where the threads start and where the head of the axle starts?

Yeh, I'm bored.

Although no experience, I have read many many times that the wheels from 97-02 are interchangeable. I have a 99 axle I can check for dimensions, but i'll need a few days, I do not have it here. If it helps I think I remember a few-

large diameter of the axle .981"
the thread M16 X 1.5mm,

I would almost bet the wheel will bolt up with no problems.

I believe that is so, also.

I can tell you that '92s wheels aren't the same as '99! I know that full well!

Why bother with the change?

The '99s are 2mm bigger? Is that right? Myabe not. I'm sure that's documented somewheres, but asking the question gives you something to do...being bored and all.

Terrably bored guys. Could'nt pass up the deal on the front forks and my buddy was needing the money to complete a bike trade for his son. He's trading a XR100 and a few bucks for a KX125. His oldest boy is wanting a little more agressive bike for the track.

These forks have been gone through. Don't know exactly what was done to them but the stickers on the front of the forks I've traced back to a suspenssion setup company, thats not all they do, but it's the name of the company.

I'm still having some sticksion problems with the forks I have on there now. They are still better than stock, but I think they could be better. I was out compairing top clamps and had the handlebars off and took the top clamp off the bike. I was going to pull the front axle an loosened the cap on the brake side ond the bottom of the fork popped outwards alittle ove a 1/16th". I decided to put it all back together and see what it felt like. It helped alot. I did'nt get over agressive tightening the top clamp. It still felt much free-er than it did before all this. Felt more rebound in the forks that just was'nt there before. Thats why I was interested in changing forks, just to get a comparison.

Funny. My kid has a CRF150 (which is way underpowered), and rode the 100. He couldn't believe what a dog that was. I got him a stock KX 85, which weighs 70 lbs less than the 150, has real suspension, and makes almost double the horsepower (20 vs. 11). That kid going from a 100 to a KX125 is going to be amazed. Speaking of amazing, check out BBR racing sometime. They make a kit to put a hopped up CRF150 motor into a aluminum frame with CR suspension components. Only costs around $10K to get a bike that could maybe compete with an 85 for less than half the price. WTF?

Jafo - hope your stiction problem is fixed by now - but if it is not, it may be that the fork bushings need to be replaced. They do wear out over time and more quickly if the fork has been run out of alignment. FWIW - Pivot works makes complete fork seals/bushings kit pretty reasonably ~65 dollars.

Thanks Charley. I'll look into it.

Here you go...care of buykawasaki.com...

Both bikes use the same wheel bearings (same axle O.D.), the same length inner collar (the one inside the hub, between the bearings), and the same seals.

Based on that, it really seems like a no-brainer, bolt-together affair.

so if i bought a pair of 97 forks and a wheel from 99 with an axel and spacers from a 99 would work. I just checked buykawasaki.com and the axels and spacers are differnt part numbers.

Nope , won't work Ryan. The axle and fork years/style have to match.

Ryan, a 97- 02 wheel will fit 97-02 forks providing you have the axle to match. For 97 forks you need the coresponding axle, do not quote me on this but I believe it is from 94-98, Check buykawasaki.
So, in short both those wheels will fit 97 forks. But a 99 axle will not work on 97 forks. (Actually it will but thats another story).

ok so if i find an axel from a 96-97 i should be good? Sounds fine to me. Now i must win the wheel and forks i am watching.

Concentrate on getting the forks. They dictate what wheel and axle you need to get.

well i was thinking of getting a pair of 97 kx125 forks and then i saw a wheel from a 99 and a 02. So i think im gonna get one of those wheels and im gonna try to get those forks. Unfortunaly i only see axels for the 99 and 02. So i will have to wait and try to find an axel that will work.

will this axel work with the 97 forks?? thanks

Do you know how to check buykawasaki Ryan?

Go to http://www.buykawasaki.com > Owners info > parts diagrams.
Fill in the fields for the particular bike and year, compare the parts numbers listed below not the ones in the image, they just help identify the part number in the chart below.
Once you have mastered this it will save you a lot of time and questions.

i did and i check the hubs of the 97 and the 99 and they were difernt, but you all said it would work so i figured buykawasaki.com was wrong.

Phil, I'd really appritiate it if you could post thos Dimensions. That'd be great! I think the wheel will interchange, just the axles are different designs.
