installing new crankshaft bearings method

Post by o/d »

hi
question about installing crank bearings. all i've been reading is using the heat/freeze method.

i was considering room temperature install using threaded rod. has any one ever done this? is it a bad idea?

thoughts, opinions & cursing outs welcome

bike is a 2002 kdx220. have new oem bearings & seals on hand.

I used the dry ice method with a crank puller and it was very easy.

Low temp oven and freezer is all you need for getting the bearings in the cases. No risk of screwing something up that way.

ABSOLUTELY do not pull on the inner race.

Don't over do it on the heat of the seal

that sounds like a very UN fun way of doing things. it's very easy with the heat and freeze differences added to the bores. basically drop the assembly together after painting the case with sealant .

installing new crankshaft bearings method

I was following the "case splitting" thread on this site. Once I re-read it, I think I found my answer.
He used a press to install seals & bearings. Threaded rod would basically be my press.

I am not talking about the crank install, which looks like cases are going to have to spend some time in the oven. And I bought the risk crank puller.

Will burn that bridge once I have seals & bearings installed and my crank back.

installing new crankshaft bearings method

Post by o/d »

hi everybody again! thought i'd update where i'm at since i'm just drinking heavily and not being productive

new crank bearings & seals in with the threaded rod used as a press. room temp.. new output shaft bearings also.

Image

used same method for c'shaft, shift shaft & kick start shaft seals

i ruined a c'shaft seal & a output shaft seal 1st attempt trying to tap them in with a socket. no more hammers on seals for me anymore - peta be after me ha
then took time to set up the threaded rod and no problems.

wondering if i should just replace all other bearings & seals at this point. just not sure what tool needed to pull the 2 small blind bearings in right hand case.

this bike has been one surprise after another. noticed the pilot jet has been broken where the screw driver slot would sit. have couple ideas of how to attempt to remove, but open to ideas.

crank should be here soon with new con rod. gonna be real nervous about final assy. after all the work on this bike
thanks for listening.

very nice, I'm getting ready to do the same with mine. I was wondering if I should go ahead and replace most of the bearings also. After reading this, I think I'm going to go ahead and do that.

installing new crankshaft bearings method

Post by o/d »

Game day for me lol
Fed ex just dropped off the last bearing I needed.
Crank shaft is in freezer.
In a few hours, I'll put r/h case in oven and attempt installing crank in r/h case half.
Couple of questions.
How hot? 200, 175?
Put case in oven & bring up to temp is what I was gonna try. Opinions?
Pardon my fear. I'm scared.
Any input like,,,
You can do this
Bring it on home kid
Its child's play
etc, is appreciated

Definitely search around as others have posted temps. Overheated the seal is a concern.

installing new crankshaft bearings method

Post by o/d »

I went with 200 degrees. Crank was in freezer for a few hours. It dropped right in. I even think I dropped the correct side in

Hopefully seal is ok. I greased and oiled it before putting it in oven. It looks fine, but...

Hopefully condensation didn't hurt lower con rod bearing. Hit it with a bit of wd40 to remove moisture.

Going to attempt the left hand case install today.
Following the "case splitting " thread at top of this page.

My plan is to use the tusk crank puller as the op did in that thread.
I see no mention of the special jig that goes between crank halves. Is it not needed because the crank is being pulled as opposed to pushed, or should I make something?

that jig that goes between the two halves is only for pressing in the crank, like the manual instructs you to do. If you pull the crank like in that thread, you do not need that jig.

I think you are ok at 200 deg, based on experience with similar seals at work.

Did you have to press the crank into the bearing at all? Or did it literally just fall together for you?

Re: installing new crankshaft bearings method

so everything was cool until sunday when i went to install the left hand case half.

i figured since right side went together easily, i would gently heat (175 degrees in oven)left side case and i put a ice pack on crank. was planning on just making it easier for the tuck crank puller.

got the sealant on the case. went to put the case on & realized i had forgot to install the 2 ea. dowels in the case

so, i got the case splitter out & pulled the left side case off - it had just started to engage.

put the dowels in, more gasket sealer & used the crank puller to install the left hand case half.

my concern is the crank seems to have more resistance. in other words it takes more force to rotate than it did prior the rebuild.

do i need to slit cases again & re-replace main bearings and seals?

Have you read anything on centering the crank with a tap from a brass hammer? I have not done it myself, nor am I suggesting you do it, but I have read a couple of reports of people doing that.

Did you replace the crank seals? You would be surprised at how much resistance those add. Not saying that is what is going on with it though.
