cylinder cleaning

Post by bws2 »

I'm working on the top end rebuild on my '01 KDX200.

I've got it disassembled and am ready to clean the cylinder.

I've read that I can clean out the bore with a Scotch Brite pad.

Are there other parts of the cylinder that need to be cleaned prior to reassembly?
If so, what's the best way to clean them?

You will want to clean the KIPS valves. For the oily spooge you can pick your favorite cleaner for greasy messes. The KIPS main valve may have some baked on residue. Some have recommended oven cleaner, but I just used the wire brush on my bench grinder to clean them up.

I cleaned the bore on my KDX220 with Scotchbrite pads and WDF40. 45° each way and the bore came out spotless with the 45° hatching in alternate directions. Keep doing it until the bore is clean. Test it by wiping it with a clean paper towel/kitchen roll after 5 minutes. Keep repeating and when the wipe comes out clean, the deglaze will be complete. If you don't have cross hatching, consider a replate.
