kdx 200 18'' or 19 rear wheel???

Post by pumpguy »

If the 19" tire has a larger circumference than the 18", you will have the effect of a slightly raised gear ratio compared to the 18". If the circumference is the same between the 2 tires, then the ratio will be the same. This assumes both wheels have the same number of teeth on their sprockets.

If the rear wheel with tire is larger in diameter than the stock 18", there is also a possibility of change to the steering geometry, causing the fork's rake angle to be slightly steeper.

It then becomes a matter of tire difference; width, rubber compound, and tread pattern. Tire diameter and width may affect clearance.

Stock for KDX H series rear tire is 100 / 100 - 18 59M as published on page 1-6 of the factory service manual.

Normally when going to a 19" rear, you would use the same overall diameter tire. That being the case, the 19 will have a shorter sidewall, be more prone to pinch flats, and have a rougher ride. 18" for trails, 19" for MX.

Stock tire size was 18". Look at any new non MX model. It will have 18".

I think 100/100 - 18 was stock for E. I think 1995+ 200 / 220 was 110/100-18.

Is anyone running a 100/90-18 rear? That is what the PO had on the 05 220 I got recently. It could use replacing, but unsure what size. Does the 220 benefit from any particular tire size? Thanks

Narrow rear tires are supposed to corner better, but wider tires get better traction. I've ran 110/100's on my old KDX's. On my hybrid I put a 100 /100 to see if I liked it better. I don't think I'm noticing any real difference. Going to switch to a 110/100 when this one wears out (plus the 110 looks better on the bike IMO)

Everyone should be using a true to size 110/100 on their kdx by now. The E is stock with 100/100, the H with 110/100. IMO the 110 size tire is a much better performer, with the exception of cornering.
