Ok thanks guys! I went back out in the freezing cold garage and checked it out again and the KX500 and KDX shaft are the same diameter. I just need to shim the upper triple up.
You cant see in the pics but there are exposed threads above the lower nut holding the upper triple above the lower nut so there is a even bigger gap under the upper triple.
My idea is to have my extra lower nut milled down so it will thread on top of the remaining threads and work perfectly as a spacer.

I am not looking at a set of triple clamsps right now, so forgive me if this sounds silly.

Are you guys putting a washer(s) under the top clamp or above the top clamp?

The washers will go under the top clamp. There is a certain spot between the lower nut and upper nut the upper triple has to be which is just under the part where the shaft tapers to a larger diameter.

I got the spare nut milled down to get it spaced about where it should be. Everything is solid now.
