lubricating fasteners

Post by bws2 »

I have a question about lubricating the nuts and bolts on my KDX200.

I seems like I've read that you shouldn't lubricate fasteners that will be torqued using a torque wrench because it can cause a false reading.

Have you guys heard of this? In general what (if any) lube should be applied to fasteners on the KDX?

Generally, if a torque value is given with no other information, it is a "dry" torque. Lubricating your fasteners actually improves torque-load ratio and can help prevent the dreaded "snapping the head off" result we all fear. Loc-tite recommends reducing torque values by around 20% when you apply it to threads. Most dry-wet torque tables give around a 25% reduction in torque value when torquing lubricated bolts. I always lubricate all my external fasteners (motor rebuilds I always use dry, just how I learned) with anti-seize, especially all those lower linkage fasteners, engine mounts, triple clamps, etc.

As far as what kind of lube, other than loc-tite threadloc I use loc-tite 77124 anti-seize. I know some guys use 10w/40, some use coppa-seal (sp?) and one even swears by paraffin wax (but he is an old school odd ball lol)
