buying new parts on Ebay

Post by bws2 »

I'm getting ready to order parts for my top end rebuild.

I was looking on Ebay and found set of Boyesen reeds carbon reeds listed for $12
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Boyesen-Super- ... CR&vxp=mtr

Also see a Cometic gasket set for $19

http://www.ebay.com/itm/COMETIC-TOP-END ... NC&vxp=mtr

Both are priced much lower than retail, so I'm wondering if these could be bogus parts.

Do you guys have any tips/suggestions when shopping for parts on Ebay?

my suggestion is hurry up and buy it before someone else on here thinks they look legit..but really its probably just someone making room on a parts shelf.

Thats a good price on the reeds, but I recommend using dual stage or a VForce 3.

x2 on that. Other people don't know what they have and are just trying to get rid of stuff. A lot of times I try to find a part number to search for and will include words like overstock or open box or something along those lines to find good deals.

As long as there is a decent description, I usually go for it. If it shows up and isn't what was described, eBay will have your back so you don't get ripped off.

I would HIGHLY recommend using OEM gaskets. (At least the head gasket.)

What's wrong with Cometic gaskets? I can't recall ever hearing anything bad about them?

Don't know about Cometic, specifically. I bought aftermarket top end gaskets for my old CR250 and the head gasket didn't last long at all. I was VERY lucky it started leaking when the bike was three feet outside my garage door and not twenty miles into the woods. My "problem" with aftermarket gaskets is you don't know what you're getting. They may be okay, they may be crap. With Japanese OEM I'm confident I'm getting good-quality parts. FWIW, I feel the same way about fork seals.

I hear what you are saying, just need to know that you are going with a quality brand. Some stuff is better than OEM, just need to know what you are buying. Cometic gaskets are a brand that I would trust. I agree about fork seals. My suspension builder insists on using OEM parts for the same reason as you. I had to argue with him to get SKF parts haha

Yeah, SKF are the definite exception to the "no aftermarket fork seals" rule. Although, by the time OEM seals start leaking I figure the oil needs changing anyway, so I might as well go OEM.
