Fuel Ratios.

Ok, I've been running 40:1 ratio gas for some time now. I seen that the manual for my '84 recommends 32:1. So I went out and bought the oil and decided to try the 32:1 ratio tomorrow. While doing all this and diving into different ratios, I realised something I had not payed attention to. Judging from different mix tables and off the oil cans, 32:1 has more oil in the gas than 40:1 ratio. Am I looking at this correctly? So the lower the ratio the more the oil???? How do you read the ratio? Is it 32 parts of oil to 1 part of gas? Or the other way around. This is the first time I've really sat down and thought about oil/fuel ratios. I've always just mixed what they recommend not paying to much attention to the details.

Jafo===If it was 32 parts oil to 1 part gas, you wouldn't make it out of the parking lot. I run 36:1--- that's 36 pints gas to 1 pint oil or 4.5 gallons gas to 16 ounces oil. Works great for me and it's easy to get a 5 gallon jug full o' the good stuff! BTW, 32:1 would be 4 gallons of gas and 16 ounces of oil.

OK I understand. I was'nt sure what exactly the measurement was they used. I've seen it in CC's, millileters, ounces (is what I use) ect. So like 32:1 ratio is 32 "pints" of gas to 1 "pint" of oil. OK. Thanks for the explenation.

Remember it's a ratio. 32:1 represents 32 "units" of one item for every 1 "unit" of another. Cicone expained it well using pints but it could be any standard measurement; i.e. gallons or quarts or ounces. I use ounces. there are 128 ounces to a gallon of gas or about 500 ounces of gas in 4 gallons. Divide the 500 by 32 and you get about 16 ounces. So just as cicone pointed out that 32:1 would be 4 gallons of gas and 16 ounces of oil, I just demonstrated the math that proves it. Get a Ratio-Rite measureing funnel from your local bike shop and you will never have to worry about the math. It has the graduations marked on the thing for any ratio for just about any amount of gas you want. I like it when I'm only mixing up, say 1 and a half gallons of gas for a partial day of riding.

I use a little bottle called "Quick Mix" made by Maxima. It "COMES" with a lid. Very handy and a lot smaller than a Ratio Rite. Got it at my dealer and it was much cheaper than the Ration Rite too.

Inda is right. I bought mine without a lid. I didn't know they even were an option. The lid keeps bugs and things out when not in use so you don't need to wipe it clean after every use. CC informed me of the option. Of course, now I have mine and they don't sell just the lid.
And Inda, they aren't that expensive. About $5 without a lid and about $6.50 with one. You shoulda asked Santa for one!

Ratio-rite lides are $2.95 at a local (usually less $ than anyone else) shop.

Yes, I've seen 'just the lid' a number of places.

Ski: Want a lid? Or you just bought another ratio-rite? I'll send you 'just a lid' if you want one.

re: 'I've seen it in CC's, millileters, ounces...'

You've seen it in my what?? ;)

As long as it's a fluid measurement it will work out. You wouldn't want to mix a pound of oil to a pound of fuel. Doesn't everybody do that? :?

The Quick Mix 2 by Maxima is $3.75 just about anywhere.... google it! And it is not funnel shaped and will fit in your gear bag. I looked at the Ratio-Rite and didn't care for it's design. I'm not saying you should get what I have, but I think I make some good points. And it is STILL cheaper! :butthead:

Pay no attention to Inda. He doesn't know what he's talking about.

The neat thing about the ratio-rite is that when mixing just a little, the funnel design allows for a more accurate reading and measurement.

If you have a spare lid CC, I could use it. I never got one. I use some saran wrap and a rubber band for now. Hang on to it and I'll pick it up next time I'm up there.

Going riding at Stonyford Saturday if anyone is wanting to check it out. m0rie?

Look in my gallery for fishing photos over Christmas in Mexican waters if I can figure out how to make my computer recognize my new digital camera I got from Santa.
